Chapter 6 Detecting the Crisis
Chapter 6 Detecting the Crisis
After making his plans, Lorraine said to Ouyang Nian, "Let's go back and set up traps first, then build a defensive line around the dormitory building to ensure our safety during tomorrow's exploration. For the rest of the time, see what else we need to bring onto the ship besides food and water. Bring as much as you can before nightfall, just in case we encounter an unmanageable crisis and have to leave by boat."
Ouyang Nian agreed after hearing this. After determining the tasks to be completed today, the two quickly returned to the warehouse, took out several bags of sulfur, and pushed them towards the pre-designated exit where the zombies would gather.
The two of them worked hard to cover the 10-meter-wide and several-meter-long road with sulfur before noon, and hung several bags of sulfur, not full, two meters above the road to ensure that it could kill the zombies.
The two then arrived at the dormitory entrance with two bags of sulfur and several rolls of cable. After confirming that this was the only entrance to the dormitory, they used the railing at the entrance to set up several tripwires that would cause zombies to roll down the stairs.
To give himself enough time to evacuate, Lorraine sprinkled sulfur on the area where the zombies had roughly rolled, ensuring the fire attack would be as lethal as possible.
After completing all this, the two returned to the forge. Lorraine helped pack water and food, while Ouyang Nian took out a greatsword, a broadsword, and a shield. He then locked the armory and began packing up the other supplies.
Suddenly, Ouyang Nian poked his head out from another storage room and asked, "I still have more than half a barrel of gasoline left. Will we be able to use it?"
"That's a diesel engine, I don't need it." Suddenly, Lorraine had a bright idea and asked, "Do you have any glass bottles, rags, or rubber products here?"
"We don't have many glass bottles, but we have enough rags, rubber products... and a few tires on the outside. Is that enough?"
"That's enough!" Lorraine looked at the sky; it was still early. Then he looked at the only four glass bottles and said, "Go cut some tires and bring them back, then cut them into strips. That should be enough to fit into the glass bottles and the oil drum. Let's make some simple Molotov cocktails."
"Then we'll hang the spiked oil drums 1.8 meters above the exit to ensure they explode from the heat, splattering the solidified gasoline everywhere among the corpses. This will avoid the dangers of premature ignition and further enhance the lethality of the fire attack."
Ouyang Nian had never imagined gasoline could be used in this way. Following Lorraine's instructions, the two worked together to make Molotov cocktails and placed them in a shady spot in the workshop for safety.
As the sun set, the two loaded all usable supplies, including weapons, food, and water, onto the ship. With the countdown to the zombie horde drawing near, they decided to take turns keeping watch, ensuring they had enough energy for the next day while also guaranteeing that no mutated zombies would pose a threat to the two on board.
One day until the zombie horde arrives.
As the sun rose, Ouyang Nian got up and stretched his stiff body from keeping watch. He yawned towards the sunlight. Luo Lin, who had just gotten up, nudged Ouyang Nian and said, "So glamorous so early in the morning? You still have to clean the dormitory building later."
Caught off guard, Ouyang Nian jumped back a long way and replied irritably, "I was just exercising." Ouyang Nian rolled his eyes at Luo Lin.
Lorraine took out food from the locker, eating while inspecting the weapons in her hands. "What kind of weapon are you going to take in with you? The dormitory building probably won't be big enough for your greatsword and scabbard. And are you going in wearing this outfit?"
Ouyang Nian picked up the shield leaning against the wall and drew out the hidden dagger. "Don't worry, after all, it was my suggestion to check the dormitory building. As for the clothes, they're in the workshop. When you're cleaning the dormitory building today, you should go back and get a Molotov cocktail just in case. You'll see them when you get back."
Lorraine remained silent, listening to Ouyang Nian's explanation, guessing that she must have hidden a suit of armor in the workshop—after all, walking around in such a thing would be too tiring.
Lorraine tucked in her sleeves, put on gloves, covered her face with a clean cloth to prevent zombie blood from splattering into her mouth, and then put on the goggles she had obtained from Ouyang Nian's workshop. After getting ready, Lorraine patted Ouyang Nian on the shoulder: "Let's go."
The two rowed the small boat towards the shore, mooring it in a place where it was easy to get on and off, ensuring a quick escape to the shore. As for the ropes securing the boat, they could simply cut them later.
Back at the workshop, Lorraine took out a glass bottle filled with gasoline, unscrewed the cap, and plugged the opening with a rag. After soaking the rag in gasoline and confirming that it could be ignited quickly, Lorraine placed it in a small bag for separate storage, ensuring it could be used quickly and would not cause any accidents due to gasoline evaporation.
After Lorraine had prepared the Molotov cocktail, she heard footsteps approaching from afar. When she looked up, she saw Ouyang Nian, fully armed.
The woman before me held a shield, wore a helmet and face shield, and a black and red chainmail that fully protected her shoulders and neck. Her lower body was clad in a 30-centimeter-long skirt armor that reached above her knees, effectively protecting her thighs without hindering her normal movements. She was incredibly imposing.
"Oh, your eye's fallen in and won't come out." Ouyang Nian chuckled and tossed over two arm guards with iron plates. "Help me put these on; it's hard for one person to do it."
Lorraine hurriedly took the two arm guards. "You've prepared way too much. You're really strong enough to do whatever you want!" Lorraine exclaimed as she helped Ouyang Nian put on the arm guards.
"After all, I don't know what might be in the dormitory building. During the previous zombie hordes, I found that there would always be zombies inside. When I checked the next day, I would always find that the iron gate had been broken open. So I wrapped the gate with a chain a few times and tied it shut. After that, the zombies couldn't break it open after a few attempts, and then there was no more movement inside."
When Ouyang Nian helped Luo Lin put on her arm protectors, he explained why she was wearing the protective gear and why she had locked the dormitory building.
"Do some exercises to get used to these arm supports. Otherwise, you might not be able to perform the movements correctly later because you're not used to the weight on your arms."
Lorraine started moving his body, as Ouyang Nian had suggested. After 10 minutes of adjustment, he regained his previous aiming speed, ensuring that the extra weight wouldn't affect his shovel swing speed.
Seeing that Lorraine had adapted to the weight of the arm guard, the two pushed a small cart, loaded it with the cables and sulfur they hadn't used up the day before, and headed to the dormitory building to investigate.
Along the way, Lorraine noticed that there were only scattered footprints on the sulfur he had scattered.
Upon reaching the dormitory building, Lorraine held his gun at attention, aimed at the gate, and gestured for Ouyang Nian to step forward and unlock the chains.
The rattling sound of the chains being unlocked made the two very nervous, but thankfully nothing happened.
The chains opened, and Lorraine stood diagonally behind Ouyang Nian. Ouyang Nian drew his short sword, holding a shield in one hand and the sword in the other, and carefully opened the dormitory building door.
The moment the door opened, a cloud of dust billowed up, and beams of light shone into the dimly lit hallway, illuminating the streaks of blood on the floor. Looking at the messy hallway, Ouyang Nian turned to look at Luo Lin. Seeing the determination in Luo Lin's eyes, she stepped into the dormitory building first.
After confirming that the weapon was ready to fire again, Lorraine followed Ouyang Nian into the dormitory building.
