Chapter 534 The Day the Gods Descend
Chapter 534 The Day the Gods Descend
Whether Leisen was lucky or unlucky, he clearly hadn't expected such a "surprise" on the escape route he had chosen beforehand. Stepping through the sewage, the passage ahead no longer led to despairing darkness or more branching paths, but to a relatively open space—the ruins of an abandoned underground pumping station. And at the entrance, outlined by the faint light and littered with rusted mechanical debris, stood several shadowy figures. Using the meager light filtering in from the entrance, Leisen finally made out the scene before him.
The next second, an indescribable feeling rushed into his brain, making him almost want to curse.
Not far ahead, two groups of people stood, clearly separated yet huddled together in the small space, wary of each other and watching him, the intruder, with suspicion. To his left was Old Chimney, the very same group that had nearly come to blows in the lair just moments before.
At this moment, however, he showed no trace of his former status as an underground emperor. He resembled a frightened wild beast, tightly protected behind him by his two remaining loyal but blood- and mud-covered confidants. To his right were Hawke and his two fellow rebels.
Hawke's old coat was torn in several places, stained with grayish-black dirt and dark red bloodstains. The burly man beside him had his visor broken, revealing half of his resolute face covered in sweat and bloodstains. The short-haired female warrior leaned against a huge, rusted pipe, holding a gun in one hand and clutching her ribs with the other, blood seeping from between her fingers, her face pale. "This is going to be interesting..." Leisen tugged at the corners of his mouth, his tone suppressing an indescribable helplessness.
The men opposite also noticed Leisen. Their eyes sharpened at first, seemingly carrying a hint of murderous intent, but when they noticed Yedi behind Leisen, the murderous intent in their eyes dissipated considerably. "Heh heh heh... No wonder you're a legendary scavenger. You managed to escape alive in such chaos, and even track us down." Old Chimney grinned, revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth. "You think I followed you here?" Leisen sneered. "I don't have time for that. To be honest, the last thing I want to see right now is you lot." As he said this, Leisen noticed one of Old Chimney's henchmen staring intently at Yedi, and couldn't help but speak coldly. "What are you looking at? Do you want to die?"
"Hey, Brother Leisen, things have already gotten this far, there's no need for us to fight amongst ourselves anymore, cough cough..." Hearing this, Old Chimney quickly raised his hand to block Leisen. "Don't give me that." The woman behind Hawke covered her wound with one hand and sneered. "Didn't you just suspect that those church dogs were called by Mr. Leisen?" Hearing this, Leisen's eyes narrowed into a dangerous arc, and Old Chimney's expression froze for a moment, then he quickly laughed and waved his hand. "Haha... that was just a reasonable suspicion, I believe Brother Leisen won't mind, right? After all, you arrived just a moment ago, and then those church dogs came to attack, isn't that too much of a coincidence?" "So what do you think now?" Leisen asked in a nonchalant tone.
"Now? Cough cough. Now of course, the misunderstanding is cleared up." The old chimney chuckled. "You see, no one would bring such a small child along before the battle begins. I think... this must be the 'companion' you're taking south, right?"
As he spoke, the old chimney forced out what he thought was a kind smile and waved to Yedi.
However, Yedi simply shrank behind Leisen, her wary eyes fixed on the people in front of her.
The old chimney's words did not ease Rayson's tense nerves; instead, they ignited his anger. He suddenly pulled out his laser gun, pointing it directly at the old chimney. The old chimney's henchman immediately raised his gun as well, and the two sides were locked in a standoff.
"Brother Leisen, what do you mean by this?" The old chimney's smile faded a bit, and he asked in a low voice.
"What do you mean? I need to ask you that." Leisen didn't even glance at the gun pointed at him, his gaze fixed on the old chimney's face. "Since I didn't bring the church here, then I need to ask you, why did you orchestrate all of this?!"
Upon hearing this, Old Chimney's face contorted with rage. "You! You don't actually think I called those church dogs over, do you?!"
"Who else could it be but you?" Hawke spoke up. "I thought you were just a coward, afraid to choose sides, but I never expected you would actually betray your life. If I had known, I wouldn't have come at all." "You knew my ass! Are you all crazy?!" Old Chimney leaned against the wall and stood up, Manchester United glaring angrily at the group and roaring. "That's my territory, my men! If I had sided with the church, I would have tied you all up long ago, why would I have waited until now?!"
The sound echoed in the quiet underground sewers. No one spoke, only the old chimney's heavy breathing could be heard. His small eyes coldly swept over everyone, and seeing that Rayson was still pointing a gun at him, he couldn't help but speak again. "You don't actually believe their nonsense, do you? Do you think I'm crazy?" Rayson's eyes narrowed slightly, his mind racing.
He didn't know much about the Old Chimney. The man was a very cunning and shrewd individual, a native of Glory City who had climbed his way up from humble beginnings to his current position, his influence deeply entrenched. If it was him, then he and Hawke wouldn't have survived. On the Old Chimney's turf, he could have easily wiped them out to claim credit, saving the Church the trouble of coming. Thinking of this, the killing intent in Rayson's eyes lessened somewhat. "But if it wasn't you, and it wasn't me, then who leaked the information?" "Is that even a question? Heh heh cough cough cough..." Taking a deep breath, the Old Chimney lowered his voice and turned his gaze to Hawke and the others. "There are only three options. We've eliminated two, so the answer is self-evident." "What do you mean by that!?" The woman behind Hawke suddenly straightened up.
"Hmph, who knows if this is all part of your plan? You bunch of madmen blinded by hatred are capable of anything. Maybe you're deliberately using this to force me to join the resistance." Old Chimney smirked. "Or... you want to use me, to make my men and those church dogs fight to the death, so you can reap the benefits." "Don't you dare slander me!"
"alright."
The woman wanted to say something more, but Hawke stopped her. He stepped forward, his gaze shifting between Old Chimney and Rayson. After a pause, he said softly, "Now is not the time to argue. Arguing won't solve anything. You just need to know that we absolutely cannot be involved with the church. As for who leaked the information, that's not something we need to address right now."
"That's right!" Old Chimney slapped his thigh. "Brother Hawke is absolutely right. Arguing like this won't help. After this, we can't stay in Glory City anymore. Let's figure out a way to escape!" Leisen frowned. "What about my pass?"
"You've reminded me of something." The old chimney paused for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Let's go south, I'll go with you, let's go, let's go now..." "No!" Hawke suddenly blocked the old chimney's path.
"What do you mean 'can't'? Who do you think you are?"
"The war has begun, and your men are fighting valiantly up there. How can you abandon them and just leave?"
"What do you know? I make them live like human beings, and they work for me. What's wrong with that?" Old Chimney staggered up to Hawke. "They live so I can live a better life, and they die so I can live on. Understand? Get out of my way!"
"Is that all? Running away?" Hawke retorted without backing down. "If I remember correctly, you've lived here since the City of Glory was founded. Are you planning to abandon your homeland?" "Why have we become like this? Why are we and those aliens being chased away by a bunch of machines? It's because there are many people like you!" "At first it was just one city, then ten cities, then a country, a planet. Abandoning, running away... If the whole world is going to end, where can you run to?!" "Do you think I want to leave here?!" The old chimney finally couldn't suppress his anger and roared.
His face was devoid of any smile; his old face trembled with anger.
The old chimney glared at Hawke. "This is my home, my city! But you've destroyed it all!!" "Resist? What do you have to resist with! Your flesh and blood? You think my hesitation just now was out of fear? Fine, I admit it was..." "That's right! I was afraid! I was scared, okay?!"
"Do you even know what day it is today, huh? Today is the day the gods of the era come to inspect the laboratory's results!"
"Yesterday's rain, and that pillar of light reaching the sky—did you think that was fireworks? That was the way the church tower communicated with the gods of the era!" "If it were just a bunch of church dogs, I wouldn't care at all, but if it's the gods of the era... If we don't run, we'll all die here, understand?!" Hearing the old chimney's roar, Hawke's imposing aura was momentarily overwhelmed, and the two behind him fell silent. At this moment, Rayson, who hadn't spoken until now, walked over.
"What did you just say?"
With a furrowed brow, Leisen stared incredulously at the old chimney.
"Today, today, is the day when the gods of this era...come...come."
Boom!
As they were talking, a terrifying tremor suddenly came from above their heads, and the entire underground sewer began to shake violently.
