Chapter 7, First Confrontation
Chapter 7, First Confrontation
In another place shrouded in darkness, two men frantically closed the wooden door of their house. Before darkness fell, they were helping to set up the mourning hall, until they saw their aunt come back to life.
"God help us, Auntie, we haven't done anything immoral, please don't target us."
"It's alright... We helped your aunt before, she won't come after us."
The aunt they mentioned was Liu Qi's deceased grandmother.
"What's wrong with you two? Why are you in such a hurry? Weren't you supposed to be helping Anguo's family set up the mourning hall today? Why are you back so early?" An old man lit a candle in the main room. The candlelight illuminated the old man's appearance, which looked seven or eight parts like Liu Qi's grandfather. His name was Liu Jianye, and he was Liu Qi's grandfather's younger brother.
"Dad... Auntie has come back to life and is killing people in the village," the second son said.
"Let's run away quickly. They say that if a person's obsession doesn't dissipate after death, they will turn into a vengeful ghost and kill people. It must be Liu Anhua and her gang causing trouble," the old man said.
The terror in the two brothers' eyes had not yet faded; they had witnessed Liu Anhua die silently before their very eyes.
"Nonsense, why are you pretending to be a corpse? Is someone playing tricks on us?" Liu Jianye said. Years ago, because of the land distribution in the village, the Liu family did indeed have grudges with some people.
"Dad, don't worry about it, let's run!"
When the two brothers saw that their father did not believe them, they quickly went forward to help him up.
Just then, another set of footsteps echoed in the dark main room.
"Second brother... Mom doesn't seem to be home..." The eldest brother swallowed.
"Mom went to town today, and judging by the time, she shouldn't be back yet," the second son replied.
Where did those footsteps in the main room come from? The eldest brother felt a chill run down his spine. He had only one thought in mind: a ghost!
"Quickly carry Father on your back and run, I'll stop him." The eldest brother immediately carried his father onto the second brother's back.
"Brother... what are you going to do?" the second brother asked anxiously.
"I'll fight him! Let's go!" The eldest brother picked up a hoe from the main room.
The second son gritted his teeth, carried Liu Jianye on his back, and ran outside.
The candlelight flickered, and a chilling wind seemed to blow through the room. Footsteps drew closer and closer until the hands covered in lividity appeared in the candlelight.
He was right; the ghosts were after them.
"Auntie, please forgive me!" the eldest son roared, immediately swinging the hoe at her.
However, he missed with the hoe and it hit the ground directly, making his hand hurt.
The ghost has disappeared.
At that moment, he heard several footsteps behind him, and his nerves immediately tensed up again.
"Uncle, it's me, Liu Qi." Liu Qi's voice rang out in the darkness.
Only then did he see clearly who the people were: the two men who had taken the guns in the mourning hall earlier, and Liu Anguo's son.
"Are you the only one here?" Sun Rui glanced around but didn't find anyone else.
"The ghost was right here. I told my brother to take our father and run away." Liu Qi's uncle was still a little shaken, but he could only answer honestly because the other party had a gun.
Sun Rui fell into deep thought. The ghost clearly hadn't targeted this man; otherwise, he wouldn't have survived with the hoe in his hand.
"Keep chasing," Sun Rui said. The ghost has already learned to use the Ghost Domain, which is not good news. Moreover, Liu Qi's grandparents are not ghost tamers; they are merely tainted by a curse. Now, Sun Rui is certain that this is a vengeful ghost that exists in the form of a curse, similar to a music box.
He remembered that the patterns of the vengeful ghost's killings were related to distance, and he was about to verify some of his guesses.
Sun Rui and the other two began to chase after the direction the two had fled, as he sensed that the vengeful ghost was located there.
Lin Zhensheng and Liu Qi were struggling to keep up with him and began to pant heavily. Sun Rui, however, was not easily fatigued due to the ghost's influence, and the group quickly caught up with the ghost.
"That's my second great-uncle." Liu Qi blurted out subconsciously. At this moment, his second great-uncle was standing there blankly, with blood flowing from his eyes, mouth, and even ears. He had been dead for a while.
Meanwhile, his second cousin was also being targeted by the vengeful ghost, which was slowly approaching him.
Sun Rui looked around and could vaguely see the path leading out of the village; it was the furthest point from the mourning hall.
"Lin Zhensheng, run out of the village in a bit. Liu Qi, stay put. I need to verify some of my guesses." Sun Rui seemed to have understood the vengeful ghost's killing pattern.
Lin Zhensheng nodded, and Liu Qi hesitated for a moment before nodding in response.
"Don't worry, if the evil spirit targets you this time, I will take action," Sun Rui said, giving the two a boost of confidence.
Before long, Liu Qi's cousin died in front of them, in the same manner as before. Liu Qi looked at the scene with some reluctance, feeling a deep sense of powerlessness.
At this moment, Lin Zhensheng immediately ran towards the edge of the village. The village entrance, which was originally so close, seemed to be infinitely stretched out, making it impossible for him to run out. This was a characteristic of the Ghost Realm.
Liu Qi stood there nervously, not moving, while Sun Rui stared at the vengeful ghost without taking any action.
Who will you be targeting?
At this moment, the vengeful ghost released his second uncle's hand and slowly walked towards Liu Qi.
Seeing this, Liu Qi understood that he had triggered the killing pattern of the vengeful ghost. He didn't move. Once an ordinary person was targeted, they were almost certainly doomed. Now he could only pray that Sun Rui hadn't lied to him.
The vengeful ghost slowly approached Liu Qi, its empty, lifeless pupils making Liu Qi's scalp tingle.
Just as the vengeful ghost was about to approach him, Sun Rui coughed. Although it was only him coughing, if you listened carefully, you could hear another cough overlapping with the original one, which made people feel particularly eerie. It was the cough of the vengeful ghost.
The moment the cough sounded, the vengeful ghost, who had been making some movements, suddenly froze in place, and the hand that was holding his also hung in mid-air. The vengeful ghost was suppressed.
At this moment, Liu Qi, who had been in a daze, immediately regained his composure; he had survived.
"Run towards the mourning hall, the faster the better." Sun Rui's face was ashen, devoid of any color, as if he would die at any moment.
Liu Qi nodded and immediately ran back.
Upon seeing this, Lin Zhensheng immediately ran over to help Sun Rui, but Sun Rui waved his hand, indicating that he did not need it.
"Do you still want to become a Ghost Tamer now? To exchange your life for the ability to briefly fight against vengeful ghosts?" Sun Rui said.
Lin Zhensheng remained silent for a while, not answering Sun Rui's question, and looked at the ghost frozen in place, asking, "What do we do now?"
"Try detaining them," Sun Rui said.
Sun Rui took out the gold body bag he had prepared beforehand. He wanted to see if he could imprison the ghost directly. The ghost was temporarily suppressed, so if he could imprison it directly, things would be much simpler.
The two men put the old man into a body bag, and the process went so smoothly that Sun Rui could hardly believe it.
After Sun Rui completely sealed the body bag, the old man inside remained completely still, just like an ordinary corpse.
"Is it that simple?" Lin Zhensheng asked in surprise upon seeing this.
"Logically speaking, a vengeful ghost would also make a similar coughing sound after being attacked by a sick ghost..." A bad thought arose in Sun Rui's mind.
Sun Rui took out his satellite phone and photographed the two deceased: "Let's go back to the mourning hall. This matter is not that simple."
The two immediately set off back to the mourning hall. Sun Rui did not open the golden body bag to check it, just in case something went wrong. It would be terrible if they accidentally released the vengeful ghost.
