Chapter 19 Haze
Chapter 19 Haze
The call to headquarters was connected.
"Hey, Zhou Wan, help me check on the general situation of Ghost Master Feng Quan. I've encountered a paranormal event here that's similar to his codename, and I need to confirm whether it's caused by his vengeful ghost resurrecting," Sun Rui said. Feng Quan's codename is Ghost Mist.
"Okay...don't hang up, give me two minutes." Zhou Wan was a little flustered; this was the first time she had received a call from Sun Rui while he was dealing with a paranormal event.
"Okay, keep quiet on your end. I'll let you know when the time is up." Sun Rui hung his phone on his waist.
Inside the headquarters communications room at this time.
Seeing Zhou Wan's flustered appearance, Zhao Jianguo immediately came over.
"Something happened in Dahan City?"
"It's not Dahan City. The location shows that Sun Rui is in Luoshan Village, Dachang City. He encountered a paranormal event there, and we need headquarters to confirm some information," Zhou Wan said quickly.
Seeing her like this, Zhao Jianguo had no choice but to pick up the call logbook on the table and start looking through it.
"Why is it Dachang City again! I'll go and inquire about Feng Quan's situation. If Sun Rui has any other requests, report them to me immediately."
Zhao Jianguo put down his notebook and walked towards his office.
Yang Jian became famous for "selling out" his teammates during the Huanggang Village incident, and Feng Quan became just as famous. After the transaction, Zhao Jianguo, thinking that Feng Quan was one of his ghost tamers, went along to find out what was going on.
At that time, Yang Jian had dismembered all four of Feng Quan's limbs, and even stuffed his head into his buttocks. Yet he did not die. He relied on some kind of supernatural power to glue his body back together, thus reviving.
Zhao Jianguo tried dialing Feng Quan's number, and to his surprise, the call was answered very quickly.
"Hello, this is Zhao Jianguo."
"Oh, Captain Zhao, is there some kind of mission?"
"No mission. I just want to know some things. Sun Rui, the person in charge of Dahan City, has encountered a paranormal event similar to your code name. I need to check on your recent situation," Zhao Jianguo said.
After a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, the person on the other end said, "I've been in Dajing City recently. Professor Wang Xiaoming is very curious about my ability to come back from the dead, and the effects of the ghost coffin on my body. I've been cooperating with his research."
"Okay, I understand. Do you have any good suggestions for dealing with similar incidents?" Zhao Jianguo asked.
"I'm sorry, I can't offer any useful advice. After all, based on current research, there aren't two paranormal events in the world that are exactly the same. Giving advice haphazardly would only harm others."
Zhao Jianguo inquired about Feng Quan's condition again before hanging up the phone.
He walked to Zhou Wan's workstation, handed her the information he had just received, and stood aside waiting for Sun Rui's reply.
Two minutes later, Sun Rui's voice came through: "Now tell me about Feng Quan's situation."
"Okay, after confirmation, Ghost Master Feng Quan has been staying in Dajing City recently and has not gone out. He cannot offer any advice regarding this incident," Zhou Wan said truthfully.
That's enough.
Sun Rui, enveloped in a grayish-white mist, hung up the phone.
"Since it wasn't Feng Quan, then this is a paranormal event that I'm unaware of." Sun Rui exhaled.
He pulled out the pistol from the body bag and immediately began to act.
The fog thickened to a certain point and then stopped, leaving Sun Rui with nothing but a white blur in his vision, making it impossible for him to discern directions.
Moreover, this dense fog had a pungent smell, like smog, but it also smelled like rotting corpses being boiled. The longer he stayed there, the stronger the smell became, making him feel very uncomfortable.
With no line of sight, Sun Rui was on edge, slowly shifting his position to avoid bumping into the vengeful ghost.
"The fog here is entirely composed of supernatural forces, rendering the ghosts' perception abilities completely useless!" Sun Rui said.
He didn't know how much time had passed when he actually saw a faint light in the mist.
Following the direction of the firelight, he remembered that oil lamps were only found in the ancestral hall.
As he walked, Sun Rui realized that his body had bumped into something; it seemed to be the gate of the ancestral hall.
"Wasn't the main door open before? How come one side is closed now?" Sun Rui muttered, leaning against the door.
He walked around the closed door and went inside. The environment, which was originally so dark, suddenly became clear. The fog in the ancestral hall had thinned out a lot, and he could barely see within two or three meters around him.
Sun Rui moved closer to the oil lamp, wanting to see if the stone statue Li Maolin had mentioned actually existed.
The altar that originally held wooden memorial tablets has been transformed into a ferocious-looking dragon-headed human-bodied stone statue, sitting cross-legged on the altar, seemingly holding a copper coin in its hand. The surface of the stone statue is bluish-black, and there is dark green moss on the base. There are also some water stains on the person's body, as if it had just been pulled out of the water.
Sun Rui stared at the stone statue for a while but didn't find anything special about it.
Just as he was about to look away, dark red blood flowed from the dragon's two eyes, running down the statue's body, some of it dripping directly from its head onto the statue's legs as it sat cross-legged.
Gradually, more and more blood appeared, staining the front half of the entire statue red, making it look somewhat terrifying against the backdrop of its surroundings.
"Playing tricks!" Sun Rui dipped his pistol in some blood and smelled it. The blood was dark red and smelled foul, like the blood released by someone who had been dead for a long time. This blood did not have any supernatural power; it was just ordinary blood.
Sun Rui stared at the eyes of the stone statue for a long time. He noticed something strange. Normally, the dragon head is not dotted with eyes, but the eyes of this stone statue were lifelike. With the two lines of blood tears, the stone statue seemed to come alive.
Moreover, the longer Sun Rui watched, the stronger his unease became.
"This stone statue is a bit strange. Why would such a thing be enshrined in a shrine?" Sun Rui brought his phone closer and took a picture. He wanted to send it to headquarters to investigate what it was.
At this moment, a cold wind seemed to rise inside the ancestral hall, and a thin mist began to drift. The flame of the oil lamp in front of the altar also flickered. After a while, the surroundings, which were originally covered by mist, gradually became clear. Only then did Sun Rui realize that this was no longer the original ancestral hall.
"Has some kind of change occurred again that I don't know about?" His gaze sharpened as he re-examined this unfamiliar place.
The ancestral hall is no longer in its previous style and looks older. A futon has been added in front of the altar, with deep knee marks on it and a greasy, shiny surface, as if people often kneel and pray on it.
At this point, the statue's eyes stopped bleeding, and even the previous blood disappeared.
"Where exactly is this place?" Sun Rui asked, somewhat puzzled.
Outside, which had been quiet, the chirping of insects rose and fell, and the moonlight shone on the ground again, as if everything was normal.
Sun Rui arrived at the door and looked outside. The dirt path that used to lead to the ancestral hall had disappeared, replaced by rows of houses. The houses were all made of blue bricks and black tiles, and the dirt on the ground had been replaced by blue bricks covered with moss. The houses on both sides formed a small alley around the ancestral hall.
"Are you kidding me!"
Every brick and piece of wood outside has a strong Republican-era style, as if Sun Rui has truly stepped into that era.
"Young man! What are you doing?"
At that moment, an old voice came from behind him.
