Chapter 15 Lack of Romantic Understanding
Chapter 15 Lack of Romantic Understanding
She meant well, but the women around her looked at Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan with scrutinizing eyes.
Lin Weiwei got angry and stood up to speak, but Su Wanwan spoke first: "Comrade Wang is right, we do need to learn their methods. However..."
She paused, a troubled expression on her face: "We both had back and hand pains from working so hard, and we're really too tired right now. How about... we trouble Comrade Wang Xiuying to clean these two rooms for us as well? Anyway, Comrade Wang Xiuying, you're such a good Samaritan, we'll definitely thank you if you help us."
Upon hearing this, the women around were stunned.
Su Wanwan may seem gentle and kind, but her words can be quite offensive.
These few words put Wang Xiuying in a difficult position.
Isn't Wang Xiuying a living Lei Feng?
A comrade needs help, are you willing to help?
If you don't do it, you're not a living Lei Feng!
Hearing Su Wanwan's words, Wang Xiuying's lips twitched. She gave an awkward laugh and said, "I smell too bad today. You guys keep going. I'll help you later if you need any more help."
After saying this, Wang Xiuying slunk away.
Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei even called out to her loudly, "Comrade Xiuying, you're a living Lei Feng! You absolutely must come when we need help!"
After responding awkwardly a few times, Wang Xiuying slunk back to her home.
Seeing Wang Xiuying flee in panic, Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei were overjoyed.
After laughing for a while, the two of them plopped down on the ground to rest.
This house is so difficult to clean. They worked for most of the day and only managed to clean one room. There's another room that's even worse, and they don't even want to think about it.
"How about... we ask someone for help?" Lin Weiwei asked tentatively.
"Who should we hire?" Su Wanwan asked. "There's no cleaning company around here."
"That's true..." Lin Weiwei's face fell.
Just as the two were worrying, they suddenly saw several women walking towards them.
She was an aunt who came home from outside to the family compound.
The one leading the group was Sister Zhang from yesterday. She walked over, looked the two of them up and down, and said, "What are you two doing sitting here? Have you finished your work?"
Su Wanwan quickly stood up: "Sister Zhang, we...we'll rest for a bit."
"Rest?" Aunt Zhang frowned. "It's broad daylight, and you're resting before you've even finished your work? You city people are so delicate."
She said, "Come on, get up, I'll teach you how to do the work."
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan exchanged a glance, inwardly groaning.
Several aunties stood at the door and looked inside, then shook their heads.
"It's been swept quite clean, but the corners are still a bit rough."
"I wiped the wall, but the water stains weren't evenly covered."
"You have to scrub hard to remove the old ash from the window cracks."
Aunt Zhang walked in, picked up a broom, and said, "Watch, I'll teach you how to sweep the corners clean."
She demonstrated, her wrist nimble, and with a quick turn of the broom along the corner of the wall, a pile of grime was brought out.
"See? You have to do it this way, use skill, don't just use brute force."
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan watched intently.
Zhang's wife was indeed quick and efficient, but that was based on years of practice.
Lin Weiwei took the broom and tried it out. She could sweep up the dust, but not very cleanly.
"You need to be a little more flexible with your wrists," Aunt Zhang commented, then turned to Su Wanwan and said, "You can't just use a wet cloth to wipe the walls; you have to dust off the surface dust first, otherwise it will just get worse the more you wipe."
Su Wanwan nodded and tried it as she was told. It was indeed a little better than before, but if she wanted to clean it as well as Aunt Zhang had demonstrated, she would have to wipe it several more times. The wall was really too dirty, as if it had been bombed. It was impossible to clean it properly without scrubbing hard.
Several aunties watched from the side, whispering among themselves.
"It's a bit better than when I first arrived."
"But they're far from being competent."
"Take your time, nobody is born knowing how."
Faced with these enthusiastic aunties, Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei decided to humbly ask for their guidance and request more demonstrations.
The aunties talked and worked at the same time, helping them solve several problems.
Just then, footsteps came from outside.
Everyone turned around and saw that Bai Rongbei and Bai Si'an had returned.
Both of them were wearing military uniforms and looked like they had just finished get off work.
Seeing so many people gathered inside, Bai Rongbei was taken aback: "What's wrong?"
Sister-in-law Zhang quickly said, "Commander Bai is back? We're teaching your wife how to do chores. They didn't do much before, so we're giving them some pointers."
Bai Rongbei glanced at Su Wanwan.
She stood there, her face and clothes covered in dust, her hair disheveled, and she was holding a dirty rag in her hand. She looked quite disheveled.
But her eyes were bright as she looked at him, a little aggrieved, yet also expectant.
Bai Rongbei's heart skipped a beat, but he remained calm on the surface: "Thank you for your trouble, Sister Zhang."
"No trouble at all," Sister Zhang waved her hand. "Once you're married, you have to learn to manage things inside and outside the house. They're not familiar with each other yet, but they'll get used to it."
Several aunties chimed in:
"Yes, there's always a process."
"As long as you're willing to learn."
"We've been through the same thing..."
Bai Si'an stood behind Bai Rongbei and glanced at Lin Weiwei.
She was also covered in dust, with a black stain on her face, and was secretly making faces at him.
Bai Si'an pushed up his glasses, and the corners of his mouth curved slightly, but he quickly straightened up again.
After listening to the aunties' words, Bai Rongbei nodded: "Thank you, sisters-in-law. Let's call it a day and let them rest."
Aunt Zhang glanced at the sky and realized it was indeed getting late, so she said, "Okay, we can talk about it tomorrow when we're free. You two must be tired today, so get some rest."
After she finished speaking, she left with several of her aunts.
The room was finally quiet.
Lin Weiwei let out a long sigh and plopped down on the ground: "My god, they're finally gone."
Su Wanwan was also exhausted and leaned against the wall.
Bai Rongbei walked in and looked around the room.
Although there was still some dust on the ground, it was much cleaner than yesterday. The walls had also been wiped, though not thoroughly, but you could tell that effort had been put in.
He turned to look at Su Wanwan: "Worked all day?"
Su Wanwan nodded and whispered, "I only cleaned one room; there's still one left untouched."
"That's enough," Bai Rongbei said. "Let's go eat first."
He turned and walked out, but stopped after a couple of steps and turned back, asking, "Can you walk?"
Su Wanwan stood up; her legs were indeed a little weak, but she still said, "Yes."
The four of them went out the door and headed towards the cafeteria.
On the way, Lin Weiwei whispered to Bai Si'an, "You see? We've worked all day, we're exhausted."
Bai Si'an hummed in agreement.
"You just say 'hmm'?" Lin Weiwei said, dissatisfied. "Can't you say something nicer?"
Bai Si'an pushed up his glasses: "What did you say?"
"For example... thank you for your hard work, or praise us for being capable," Lin Weiwei said.
Bai Si'an glanced at her; her face was still covered in dust, her hair was messy, but her eyes were bright, waiting for his praise.
He pursed his lips and said, "My face is dirty."
Lin Weiwei: "..."
She kicked him in anger: "You have no sense of romance!"
Bai Si'an took a kick, but didn't dodge; instead, the corner of his mouth curved up again.
