Chapter 104: Late-Night Visit
“Go on.”
Hera waved her hand. “While you’re at it, check the inventory of Magic Crystals in the treasury and report it to me tonight.”
……
Cold and damp, the air was filled with the stench of sulfur and rotting flesh.
Lilia stood before a massive iron door engraved with skull reliefs, carrying two large buckets of freshly bleeding magical beast meat, her legs trembling uncontrollably.
“Just do it!”
Lilia took a deep breath.
The heavy iron door slowly opened.
Roar——!
A foul wind rushed toward her.
In the darkness, six crimson eyes suddenly lit up.
Hell Cerberus.
It had originally been dozing atop a pile of gold coins, but upon smelling a stranger, it immediately stood up. Its thick limbs dug into the ground, carving deep grooves into the hard stone floor.
Lilia felt like her heart was about to leap out of her throat.
The middle head of the three-headed beast stared at her intently, a low growl rumbling in its throat, as if it would pounce and tear her apart in the next second.
Lilia forced herself to calm down.
She slammed the two buckets of meat heavily onto the ground.
“Eat!”
She tried her best to make her voice sound fierce.
The three-headed dog froze for a moment.
This two-legged creature… wasn’t afraid of it?
The left head leaned in to sniff the meat in the bucket, then glanced at Lilia, its eyes showing a hint of confusion and… disdain.
Suddenly, it raised its paw and smacked one of the buckets away.
Clang!
Chunks of meat scattered across the floor.
The middle head let out a roar at Lilia, as if saying: You think this kind of trash is enough to fool me?
Lilia snapped.
She could tolerate slaving away for survival under her boss—but now even a dog dared to give her attitude?
Maid’s Monstrous Strength (Beginner) activated!
Lilia stepped forward in one stride, giving the beast no time to react. She swung her right fist and smashed it directly onto the middle head.
Bang!
A dull thud echoed.
The once-arrogant Hell Cerberus had its head slammed downward, its jaw crashing hard against the ground.
The other two heads tried to bite at her—
Lilia backhanded them with two slaps.
Smack! Smack!
“You think you can act up just because I gave you face?!”
Lilia pointed at its nose and cursed, “Eat if you want—if not, get lost!”
The Hell Cerberus was stunned.
It let out a whimper, all three heads shrinking back simultaneously as it lay flat on the ground, not daring to move.
Those six eyes no longer held any ferocity—only… grievance?
It cautiously stretched out its tongue, scooping up a piece of meat from the ground and chewing it noisily.
While eating, it kept sneaking glances at Lilia, afraid of getting punched again.
Lilia dusted off her hands and snorted.
As expected.
Even dogs bully the weak and fear the strong these days.
With the vicious beast handled, the inventory work went much more smoothly.
The treasury was piled high with glittering Magic Crystals and gold coins, along with all kinds of rare materials she couldn’t even name.
Lilia’s eyes were dazzled—she almost wanted to stuff a handful into her pockets.
But she restrained herself.
……
Back at the inspection department.
The succubi were still writing furiously.
Seeing Lilia return, Vanessa hurriedly handed over a compiled report.
“Department Head, the first phase of fund flow has been clarified.”
Her voice was hoarse, clearly from exhaustion. “It mainly flowed into three underground banks at the border, and there’s also a large sum whose destination is unknown.”
Lilia flipped through the report.
It was even better than she had expected.
“Not bad.”
She rarely gave praise. “As for that unknown sum, no need to investigate further. I know where it is.”
Vanessa let out a sigh of relief.
“Alright, dismiss.” Lilia waved her hand. “Continue tomorrow.”
The succubi felt as if they had been granted amnesty, each clutching their waists as they slipped out like refugees.
Lilia looked at the now-empty room and rubbed her temples.
This day had been truly fulfilling.
So fulfilling that she had almost forgotten…
Lilia glanced at the crimson blood moon outside the window, and that sense of unease surged back again.
Mary.
That little lunatic.
……
Back in Hera’s Bedchamber.
The Queen had already finished bathing.
Lilia walked over and, as if by habit, picked up a comb to tend to her waterfall-like long hair.
Hera closed her eyes, enjoying the just-right pressure on her scalp.
“The dog fed?”
“Fed.” Lilia’s hands didn’t stop moving. “It ate very well.”
“No tantrums?”
“None.” Lilia lied with her eyes open. “Very obedient. Extremely well-behaved.”
A faint smile curled at Hera’s lips.
It seemed this little maid had some methods after all.
“No need to stand guard tonight.”
Hera suddenly spoke.
Lilia’s hands paused.
No need to stand guard?
That was a good thing.
But it also meant… she had to sleep in her own room.
“Yes.”
Lilia responded softly.
After arranging Hera’s bed, Lilia withdrew from the Bedchamber.
She returned to her own room.
She locked the door, then dragged a chair to brace it under the handle.
She didn’t take off her clothes.
She simply lay down.
This kind of waiting was the most tormenting.
Maybe she had just said it casually?
Maybe she wouldn’t come tonight?
Lilia comforted herself like that.
Her eyelids grew heavy.
After a whole day of investigating and feeding the dog, her physical strength had been greatly depleted.
Just as her head began to nod and she was about to fall asleep—
Knock, knock, knock.
Lilia’s eyes snapped open.
She had come.
