Chapter 69: The Game
Chapter 69: The Game
The sun had set and darkness lurked in the corner but this wasn’t the end of the day.
There was still plenty of time before the day ended.
Sam took control the moment they were within the wall, Sam didn’t know where Jason was but Bella did, she felt a gun pressed against her back.
She didn’t understand why Sam was this extreme, she didn’t hurt any of them.
Clementine knew this was the best route or Sam would have put a bullet in her head, that was the alternative so she was content with this.
"No! No! No! This is bad!" Bella, for the first time, looked like she was panicking.
"What’s wrong?" Clementine asked calmly.
"The game... Jason has been chosen!" Bella said, the urgency in her voice conveying how bad this was.
"You better start talking or I will play a game with you," Sam threatened her, still having trouble believing her.
"Can you stop threatening me or just pull the fucking trigger already!? I don’t have the energy for this!" Bella said and this tone took Sam by surprise.
Bella, however, knew this was her queue to explain the situation to them.
"It is called the Dead Man Standing, they pick a living person and..." Bella hesitated.
"What? What is next?" Rachel questioned but she sounded angry.
The arena was already set, there were multiple people around it, cheering like mad men and women.
"We cannot interfere with the game or we will be killed, this is the only time the Specters gather," Bella said; Sam was confused as to what she was referring to but he also didn’t care enough to press it further.
The cover of the dark should help conceal their identities but Sam found himself eager to see what this game was about.
Rachel was worried because for Bella to be this frightened, then what was about to happen must be serious,
Sam broke away from the group, no one recognized him and he had his doubts that with the smell of booze and drugs in the air, anyone would even pay any heed to him.
Sam pushed through the crowd and Clementine tried to call him back but he was absorbed into the group of people.
Clementine and Rachel rushed towards Sam but Bella didn’t because she was at risk of being figured out as her face was well known in this part of town.
If anyone spotted her, there was no way that they wouldn’t recognize her so Bella hung back.
Sam managed to get to the front and what he saw both intrigued and horrified him.
Jason was in a pit, blindfolded with multiple zombies around him, they were chained like dogs and Sam could only guess that Jason had to fight his way out of this pit.
The fact that they were growling should alert Jason of their position but there was no way for him to know how they would attack.
The undead were feared yet these men found a way to turn into amusement and Sam was clearly disgusted by this.
He felt a hand on his shoulder and a whisper followed.
"Don’t Sam," Clementine calmed him down because his hand was reaching for his waist.
Rachel soon joined the party, Sam noticed that there were ten chairs with a light torch right in front of them but he couldn’t make out their features.
Right now, Jason had to survive this on his own.
-
Jason was terrified, the wounds on his body were still open. He couldn’t even move without his body being overcome with immense pain.
He could hear growling around him but he could also hear cheers telling him that there were people around him.
"There are 4-5 zombies around me but if they aren’t attacking, it means that they’re being restricted for some reason," Jason was rational with his thought process and knew exactly what to do.
[Ding!]
[Chronos Hidden Quest Completed!]
[Reward: 100 EXP!]
Jason was getting irritated with his system because he hadn’t done anything yet for this mission to even be considered complete.
All he did was toss something randomly in the cell he was imprisoned in right before he was extracted from his cell.
Unless this was the thing that Chronos wanted from him but Jason was glad he got that much EXP for doing nothing but it would be in vain if he died here.
Jason braced himself for the zombies, they had given him a metal baseball bat.
Jason tried to calm his breathing and rely on his other senses but this didn’t do him any good.
He heard the zombie charge at him due to the footsteps and the dangling chains, the growling got louder and Jason swung but his bat met no mass.
The force with which he swung contorted his body into an awkward position as the wounds he was riddled with were felt with every fibre of his body, the zombies were collared and the person holding the collar halted the advance of the zombie by pulling at the chain.
This made the zombie stop and Jason’s bat missed, and then he let go of the zombie once again, the zombie jumped on Jason, managing to push him to the ground.
Jason knew it couldn’t allow it to mount him but he was grateful for that level up because he could at least match this zombie in strength and speed.
Jason used the bottom of the bat to randomly swing and swing, eventually managing to hit him right in the jaw.
This didn’t just break the jaw, it shattered it completely, Jason knew he couldn’t allow the blood of the zombie to mix with his or he could be in trouble, there was no way he wouldn’t be infected if that happened.
The crowd cheered at Jason’s gallant display but luckily for Jason, all that movement loosened the blind around his eyes as it slipped to allow partial sight.
This increased his survival rate exponentially.
"BRING IT ON YOU FUCKERS!" Jason screamed at the top of his lungs and the crowd went silent, right before erupting into chaotic cheer.
