System Of The Undead

Chapter 109: Gerard And Mariam

Chapter 109: Gerard And Mariam

Jason was taken into a room, the lights were switched on so this told him that they still had access to electricity, this was good.

He was left alone with a glass of water but Jason was far too paranoid to drink it.

He was certain that something was in his drink but he had no way of knowing.

It was better to be safe than sorry and Jason knew this all too well.

He sat in silence, waiting for anyone to come through that door.

It seemed like an eternity because he was anxious about what he was going to be asked.

This prompted him to activate his skill, As Cool As A Cucumber.

He needed a level head and that was when the door opened, it didn’t creak showing that it was in pristine condition. The chairs didn’t look old either, they all looked new.

A rather short man walked in, measuring no more than 4’ 11 in height even though this was the least of his problem. He had on a suit with his beard neatly shaven and medicated glasses hanging on the bridge of his nose.

"Hello..." The man said, pausing briefly as he looked at the clipboard in hand.

"...Jason," The man said, adjusting his glasses as he sat opposite Jason.

He looked at the young man right in the eyes, this man was in his mid-late forties.

Jason wondered why he needed a clipboard to remember his name, it looked like something that he could memorize before entering the room.

"That is correct," Jason responded in a casual tone, he didn’t want the man to be more suspicious than he already was.

"And the ladies you came with, can you tell me their names?" The man asked.

"They are called Allison, Anabella, Clementine and Rachel. Is there a problem?" Jason asked.

"There is no problem, or at least for now. I’m called Gerard and I will be asking you a series of questions and I want you to answer honestly. Can you do that for me?" Gerard asked.

Jason nodded, he had no intention of lying as this would only compromise the thin ice they already were on.

"My first question is, how many people and zombies have you killed, before and after the fall?" Gerard asked.

This was an easy question that Jason could answer but then he remembered that his hands weren’t clean ever since the apocalypse started.

"Um... I never killed anyone before the fall but I have killed three people after the fall but that was only to protect myself... As for zombies, I can’t recall..." Jason said bluntly.

He noticed the man jot something down in his clipboard, he didn’t know what it was but he knew that it had to do with him taking a life.

Jason was sure that this would end with that and they get thrown out.

"Onto the next set of questions, I want you to give me a detailed account of how you met the people you met," The man said and this was where he had Jason.

Jason was so focused on memorizing the story that Lillian had told him that he completely neglected the stories of the other people.

Who could blame him? There was so much to assimilate in so little time.

Jason took a deep breath and tried his hardest to remember but nothing was coming to mind.

"Chronos, can you help me out here?" Jason requested.

Chronos had already asked him to help it get stronger, there was no way that it would pass up the opportunity to be in his good graces.

Chronos proceeded to brief Jason on everything that Lillian had said and Jason repeated it, word for word.

This was another hurdle passed, he knew that they would do the same to the others and their stories had to align.

Jason hoped that they were paying more attention to Lillian than him.

Gerard was satisfied with this response and wrote it down on his clipboard.

Jason held his breath, he didn’t know what the next set of questions would be but he hoped it wouldn’t be as complex as the one just asked.

Even though he had Chronos, he didn’t want to rely on the system too much.

"One final question..." Gerard said to which Jason gulped in anticipation.

"How do you think you can help this community?" Gerard questioned, adjusting his glasses.

This was an easy question that Jason could answer but he didn’t know if there was a right answer.

Jason also knew he couldn’t overthink it because if he wasn’t the first this man had interviewed, the man would most likely pick up on things that others would otherwise miss.

Jason knew the consequence of messing this up, it wasn’t even on the agenda.

"I can help strengthen your security and go out outside of the community to scavenge for things that would be useful for the group," Jason said.

He knew this was pivotal because not many would like the idea of going outside of the wall so this should be an invaluable position.

Jason waited for Gerard’s response but the man was too focused on his clipboard, delaying his response.

"That is interesting..." Gerard said, ticking something on his clipboard and Jason knew that this had to be a good sign.

"We will have to do one last inspection, we have to check you for any bites," Gerard said.

This had to be good, if he didn’t pass the test then there would be no reason to check for bites as they would just be throwing him out.

"Bites?" Jason asked.

"That is right, do you consent to the search?" Gerard asked and Jason had to give them points for the way they conducted things. Jason realized that there was no way that Allison’s tattoo wouldn’t be seen at this rate.

"I do," These were the words that escaped the lips of the red-eyed man.

-

Allison was in the interrogation room, and the method of her interrogation was a lot different from Jason’s. They knew she was an adult despite her height and that was because of one common factor. The aura she exuded.

Allison wasn’t left alone in the room neither were the girls separated.

They were all together and this made it a lot easier for them to keep their calm.

"What is going on?" Rachel asked, no one was in the room with them.

"I have no idea but we should be careful with what we say..." Clementine responded in a hushed tone.

This was if there was a hidden camera or otherwise, they couldn’t risk being careless at this time.

A lady walked in but she wasn’t what they were expecting, she was drop-dead gorgeous.

She was in her late thirties with little to no wrinkles on her flawless face, her body features were perfect for breeding as she had fat in all the right places.

She was tall, easily measuring 6’ 0 without the heels and wore heels, dressed in an elegant corporate dress code, she had on a black blazer with a white shirt beneath it but that wasn’t all, the short body-hugging black skirt she wore showed her hips and ass in all its glory.

She took off her jacket and gave it to someone that was standing behind the day, her shirt was buttoned down a couple of pegs, revealing her cleavage.

"Damn, she’s hot," Bella blurted out.

In this apocalypse, she had managed to maintain her sex appeal but that was only possible because she remained within the walls.

The lady didn’t take a seat, she just looked at them and smiled.

"Welcome to the community, my name is Mariam," This was all the lady said.

She didn’t ask them any questions and straight-up accepted them.

Naturally, this made the girls suspicious because it shouldn’t be this easy.

"What?" Clementine muttered.

"I have heard everything I need to hear from Carl," Mariam said as she began ticking the clipboard she had in hand.

"Carl? Do you take the word of everyone without questioning?" Clementine asked and this was partly due to safety reasons.

"I take the word of my son very seriously, he told me the grumpy one is the only one we needed to keep an eye on and it appears that he isn’t here," Mariam said.

The ladies were speechless, they were still trying to process the fact that this lady was the mother of the boy they had encountered.

If this wasn’t a sign that the universe was on their side then what was?

"Why did you take Jason if this was the case?" Rachel asked.

"We didn’t know who the grumpy man was, that was only to make sure," Mariam reassured Rachel.

"We will need to check you for marks, however," Mariam said and this was normal.

"Marks?" Allison finally spoke up.

"That is right, we need to see if you have been bitten," Mariam was speaking with such poise, that the ladies here felt sort of intimidated by her superior aura.

Allison, however, realized that she ran the risk of compromising the authenticity of the group.
