Chapter 286: The Call
Chapter 286: The Call
Sam was caught off guard and if it was a lesser man, that would have spelled certain death but Sam was aware of something watching him for quite some time.
Sam was a soldier through and through, there was no way he would drop his guard to the degree of being defenceless.
He has encountered enough evolved to know that they had an abnormal pattern, ranging from cautious to reckless.
The creature leapt at him but Sam managed to get out of the way just in time, picking up a rock at the bed of the stream in the process to fight with.
Sam chuckled, he was impressed that a zombie could move the way it did despite being dead for quite some time.
It showed no signs of decay. Not only that, it showed no signs of being dead.
"Would you look at that..." Sam commented as the body that had narrowly missed him lay in the water right in front of him.
"That is strange, you’re alive..." Sam said and the view of a woman in her mid-to-late thirties came into view, she was slender, almost malnourished but she didn’t show any signs of fatigue.
Sam couldn’t place it but there was something wrong with her and he confirmed this by the little impression her body mass left on the ground.
That wouldn’t have been possible with that body mass and Sam realized that his head would have been gone if she landed her blow.
The lady quickly grabbed a gun and pointed it right at Sam, she had black eyes but this wasn’t what made her stand out.
It was her sharpened teeth, Sam didn’t know who she was but her teeth, there was no doubt that this was what Sam spotted on the corpses.
She was the one that killed them and Sam was certain that she had used her teeth to fuck them up.
Sam wasn’t bothered with the gun pointed at him and instead, continued to wash his body in the water.
The fact that he was stark naked and wasn’t embarrassed by the situation.
"Are you going to use it or...?" Sam questioned, the lady knew that there was something different about Sam as opposed to the people she had killed.
"Get out of my lake..." The lady said but she wasn’t from the United States, she had a French accent and Sam chuckled the moment he heard this.
"Your lake? Are you 7?" Sam mocked her before taking another dip but that was when the woman pulled the trigger.
However, she didn’t plan to kill him and this was a warning shot but this was when Sam’s demeanor changed.
Before she could even react, Sam splashed water right into her eyes forcing her to involuntarily pull the trigger but it missed him once again.
Sam grabbed her by the neck and slammed her into the water but he didn’t allow her to come up for oxygen.
"Why do people attack first before using their words? You all make me seem like a monster when it is you that don’t have manners," Sam spoke but the lady was busy fighting for her life.
She thrashed around intending to break free but Sam was stronger than her or so he thought.
It didn’t take long for her to overpower Sam but this shouldn’t be possible as she landed a kick to push him away from her.
She rushed up for her, coughing as the sweet release of oxygen passed through her lungs.
But that was soon replaced with aggressive coughing.
"Huh?" Sam thought to himself, there was no reason for her to be this strong but he got that same uneasy feeling he had before.
"You... What are you?" Sam questioned but this was more of a rhetorical question.
The woman now recognized him as a threat that needed to be taken care of and before she could pull the trigger, she froze in place like she was given a command.
Sam noticed this as her eyes became distracted and then it hit him, the reason why she was so strong to overpower him despite her fragile look and her location couldn’t be a coincidence.
"You... You hear the voices too, don’t you?" Sam questioned and the look of surprise on her face gave him his answer.
"You are Sam?" The lady asked, slowly lowering her gun even though Sam had the upper hand in this exchange, he knew how to exploit any weakness shown by an enemy.
And this wouldn’t be any different as he had a stone in hand, ready to smash her head in with it.
"How do you know my name?" Sam asked.
"He told me..." The lady responded but she coughed once again but this wasn’t as a result of gasping for air.
It was due to being exposed to the fragment for a fixed duration, Sam didn’t know why she altered her teeth but it increased her fighting ability.
"He told me to come here..." She continued and then Sam realized that it wasn’t just him that Jason was talking to, it was everyone that had come into contact with the fragment.
And before the conversation could go further, another person came into view looking just as confused as anyone would be.
Jason wasn’t just planning to get rid of this parasite’s hold on the world but he was assembling his own set of evolved humans to fight back against the undead.
If anything, they had assimilated to the point that Jason shared the very thought of Chronos, he knew things he shouldn’t know and this included the goal of Chronos.
Chronos was known as time and it was only a matter of time before the entire world was enslaved.
But where was Jason and how strong had he become for him to have this much power?
It was unknown where Jason was or what state he was in.
However, whatever Jason was doing was the last hope humanity had at defeating this invasion for everyone had fallen.
