System Of The Undead

Chapter 304: Will You Join Them?

Chapter 304: Will You Join Them?

The gunshots drew everyone inside and they realized that the person responsible for those shots was not even conscious.

Corey recognized him immediately, he was one of the people that he had sent out and never came back.

This couldn’t be a coincidence because there was a huge bite mark around his neck, blood was everywhere but he seemed to be delirious as he couldn’t distinguish the living from the dead.

Everyone ducked for cover but Corey put a bullet right between his head without hesitation.

This created panic in the camp as Corey initially thought it was a weapon wound but upon closer inspection, he realized that it was a bite mark.

There was no way a zombie could sneak up on his men so it had to be the evolved zombies he heard so much about, he had fought them once so he understood that they had this skill.

It had been a year since he saw one so there was no telling how much stronger they had become.

"We have a problem!" A man screamed at the top of his lungs, retreating from the forest and back into the camp.

Corey made eye contact with Braydon and they both knew they would need to work together to get out of this alive because they were surrounded.

That was why it took the zombies so long to arrive, the four that led them made sure to surround them from all possible angles and this cut off all possible escape routes.

There was no way for them to escape and the formation slowly began to constrict but these zombies had learned to fight smartly.

They didn’t approach directly but simply held the formation without making contact with these people.

Corey was shocked that they had developed the ability to actively carry out strategies, the fight back at the community a year ago was something entirely different.

The zombies showed signs of strategy but it was lacking, they simply used their numbers to overwhelm them in the end, and there was nothing complicated about that.

However, they had formed a circle and cut off their access to anyone outside the ring, keeping everyone out and in simultaneously but why let this man return to the camp?

That was because they had slowly begun to understand emotions that they had lost, that was fear.

They knew the power of fear and that was exactly what they wished to trigger by letting that man return to the camp.

The desired effect it had was favorable but there was something that the zombies were yet to understand, and that was the overwhelming desire to survive.

Corey and Brayden had their differences because there was a chance that this could be their last day on earth.

"Give them their guns," Brayden commanded, he knew he needed all the help he could get but he wasn’t surprised by the zombies’ mannerisms.

"You act like you have seen this before..." Corey said as an assault rifle was given to him.

"The zombies have slowly become like people over the years, I cannot explain it but they are learning, they are adapting and getting stronger," Brayden said.

Corey thought it was a good thing that they were shielded from the zombies but that seemed to be making them weaker.

They had limited knowledge of how strong these creatures had become but this was going to be a lesson needed.

"What do you mean by becoming like people?" Corey questioned.

"They have learned to communicate," Brayden revealed and Corey finally understood why their attack was so coordinated a year back even though it had some flaws.

This wasn’t new information but this was on another level.

"They are waiting until nightfall so we would not be able to see them, they will have the advantage in every aspect of this battle that is about to come," Brayden pointed out.

Rachel and Glenn were armed to the teeth, Brayden was glad that they came when they did but on the other hand, this would have never happened if they never did.

The gunshot was what drew them and Glenn began to fear for the worse.

There was a chance that Dimitris was one of the casualties and if that was the case, things in the community were about to change for the worse.

Dimitris was one of the people keeping things in order and without him, there was no telling what chaos awaited them and Glenn hoped to God that they weren’t about to find out.

-

Dimitris had no plans on leaving Glenn and Rachel to their devices as he was a man who knew the dangers of what awaited them.

He covered himself from head to toe with the flesh of the dead so they couldn’t perceive him, that was the advantage he currently had.

Dimitris established that the horsemen were at different cardinals so that made it harder to break through their formation.

The accuracy with which that spear was thrown, it was like they were evolving starting from the stone ages but what would happen the day they learn to use a gun?

That would be the day that they gained an unprecedented advantage over humans as humanity’s only advantage was the weapons that they wielded.

"This is bad..." Dimitris thought to himself because they had almost forgotten how terrifying these creatures were.

Back in the community, Shantel knew that she had to look after Lillian now that her sister was gone. She tried her best to keep her company even though it was awkward.

Mathias noticed her efforts because she was always lingering around her and decided to offer her a few pointers.

He saw her sitting alone at the makeshift park that they had made and sat beside her.

Shantel was startled, showing that she was lost in thought herself, no one knew anything about her but that was because it didn’t matter.

Shantel looked over her shoulder and was surprised to see Mathias, he had been so occupied in his work that people barely saw him outside and quite frankly, he looked like shit.

"You’re doing a far better job than you realize," This was all Mathias said and for some reason, Shantel broke down in tears like this was what she was waiting to hear.

She has been here for a year and still felt like a stranger and Lillian was the only thing that helped give her some sort of purpose but it looked like she didn’t need her.

If anything, she was becoming lonely and Mathias knew how that felt.
