Chapter 1640 - 1626
Chapter 1640 - 1626
After they sat down, Yuwen Kangli acted like he was the host. Smiling broadly at everyone, he said, "I’ve already ordered this restaurant’s most famous signature dishes. If there’s anything else you want to eat, you can add to it."
Right on cue, the waiter brought over the menu. The waiter clearly had good instincts; he handed the menu straight to Han Wanwan and said to her, "Miss Han, our restaurant’s specialty is the Drunken Smoked Duck. When Young Master Yuwen comes, he orders it a lot."
Han Wanwan took it casually. As she flipped through it, she said, "Didn’t Young Master Yuwen just say he already ordered?"
Her tone was icy cold.
The waiter froze for a second, then instinctively looked up at Yuwen Kangli. He hurried to explain, "This Drunken Smoked Duck isn’t among the dishes Young Master Yuwen ordered."
Han Wanwan glanced up at him. "Just now Young Master Yuwen said to bring out your best dishes. And you also said this Drunken Smoked Duck is your restaurant’s specialty. If it’s a specialty, it should be your best. Since it’s your best, why isn’t it included?"
The waiter was instantly speechless. Put that way, it actually sounded kind of reasonable.
"I’ll go arrange it right away."
With that, he turned and hurried off to make arrangements.
Yuwen Kangli gave an awkward little cough. How could he not understand the waiter’s intentions? The guy just wanted Han Wanwan to show a bit of concern for him. Unfortunately, what he and Han Wanwan had was only an agreement. Concern? That kind of thing did not exist.
"Mr. Chu, see if there’s anything you’d like to eat."
Han Wanwan handed the menu to Chu Ge.
Girls put weight loss first, and she was a celebrity on top of that. Image management mattered. So no matter what they ordered, she’d only have a few bites. Asking her to order? Forget it.
Chu Ge ordered a few small dishes. To his surprise, he found that some of the food here also existed in their own time and space. He just didn’t know if it tasted the same.
"By the way, what brought Mr. Chu to the crew today?"
Once the ordering was done, Yuwen Kangli immediately started fishing for a topic to chat about with Chu Ge.
"Our director wanted to invite Mr. Chu to act."
Han Wanwan explained off to the side.
"Mr. Chu, you can act too?"
Lin Dong looked at Chu Ge in surprise. His eyes were filled with shock—and worry.
Chu Ge nodded. "Strictly speaking I wouldn’t say I can act. I told the director I’d only take on supporting roles. Don’t worry, I won’t mess it up."
The last sentence was meant for Lin Dong—to tell him he wouldn’t screw things up, and definitely wouldn’t let anyone notice who he really was.
But Lin Dong was still a bit worried. "Can you really do it? It’s going to be on TV, you know?"
If someone with an agenda saw it and used it to make trouble, wouldn’t that be...
"Supporting roles don’t get much screen time on TV, and hardly anyone pays attention to them."
Chu Ge explained.
"True. I really don’t get what you’re thinking. You actually want to play a supporting role. Tons of people are dying for a chance at a lead and never get it, but you just push it away."
Han Wanwan said, voice dripping with sarcasm.
Every time she thought of him giving up the lead role, her chest felt stuffed. That script was so good. The character pretended to be an idiot at first—she really wanted to see what Chu Ge would look like playing dumb.
Chu Ge gave a small cough and smiled. "Everyone has their own ambitions. I don’t want to become widely known through acting, so a supporting role is just fine."
"But even if you play a supporting role, lots of people will still know you."
Yuwen Kangli chimed in from the side, "These days there are lots of golden supporting actors who are more famous than the leads."
"..."
Chu Ge was momentarily speechless. He lowered his eyes slightly. "Can’t be helped. I’m short of money right now, so I can only rely on this to earn a bit."
Actors get money fast. It was a last resort.
"You’re short of money?"
Yuwen Kangli and Han Wanwan stared at him in shock at the same time. Clearly, neither believed what Chu Ge had just said.
In their eyes, Chu Ge was the last person who cared about money.
Seeing their weird looks, Chu Ge thought he’d said something wrong again. He hurriedly turned to look at Lin Dong, only to find Lin Dong staring at him in surprise as well.
"Mr. Chu, what do you need money for?"
Lin Dong asked curiously. He had honestly never thought about this before. He’d always assumed Chu Ge was spending Mr. Chu’s money.
But thinking back now, ever since Chu Ge came to the Capital City, he’d basically been supporting himself, not using Mr. Chu’s money or his phone.
In that instant, a few shades of respect for Chu Ge welled up in Lin Dong’s heart.
"People live in this world, they need a goal. Right now my goal is to make money."
Even if he couldn’t take that money with him in the future, at least he had something to strive for now. Otherwise, if he drifted aimlessly, doing nothing every day, it wouldn’t be long before his life lost its direction and he completely lost himself.
"Mr. Chu, if you’re short of money, I can lend you some."
Yuwen Kangli had barely finished speaking before Chu Ge turned him down. "No. I’m going to use this money to invest and do business. If you lend it to me, I still have to find ways to earn it back to repay you. I might as well just earn it myself from the start and spend my own."
He absolutely didn’t want to leave behind a pile of debts when he left. That wasn’t his style, and it wasn’t the kind of person he was.
Yuwen Kangli said, "I know you’ve got a good business mind. Look at the Gambling Stone Field and the bar you set up. They’ve even gotten the old street noticed by the authorities again. If I give you this money, just take it as an investment."
Lin Dong nodded in agreement. "Mr. Chu, on this point, I actually think Young Master Yuwen is right."
He figured if Chu Ge really went into acting, and if one day Mr. Chu suddenly returned, wouldn’t that mean Mr. Chu would have to keep acting too? He’d never heard of Mr. Chu having any acting skills.
More importantly, the Chu Ge in front of him was a business prodigy, a financial whiz. Money in his hands wouldn’t turn into useless junk; it would become a money-making machine, money generating more money.
Chu Ge hadn’t expected Lin Dong to think so highly of him. He smiled and said, "I already agreed with the director. I can’t go back on my word. I appreciate your kindness."
Han Wanwan was very much in favor of Chu Ge acting. That way she could not only see him every day, she could bully him every day too. Why not?
Of course, she didn’t dare say that out loud.
Seeing how firm he was, Yuwen Kangli couldn’t push it any further. He turned to look at Han Wanwan, suddenly thought of something, and asked curiously, "I remember you were going to act in a military drama before, right? Does that show have anything special about it?"
Han Wanwan curled her lip. "What special could it have? The script’s already been passed on by a certain someone."
As she said this, she shot a glance at Chu Ge. Chu Ge looked a bit confused. "I’m not doing it, but you can."
Han Wanwan gave a disdainful snort. "Do you even know the full content of that script? And you’re already telling me to act in it."
