Chapter 532 The Polluted City (26)
Chapter 532 The Polluted City (26)
Adenauer found some new clothes in the gas station's convenience store. They were basically the kind of clothes commonly worn by truck drivers or those who love hunting. He casually picked out some suitable boots, jeans, a striped shirt, and a fur vest, and put them on, looking like a truck driver with a hunting hobby. Although his clothes looked normal, his Germanic face was a bit out of place with his clothes.
Using his clairvoyance, Adenauer saw the fuel gauge on the gas pump outside. Filling up the truck would take several minutes. With nothing else to do, he decided to rest in the convenience store. He grabbed a drink from the freezer and leaned against the counter, sipping his iced drink while trying to figure out how to get into Johor Bahru.
According to what he had learned from veteran police officer Juan, Johor Bahru was heavily guarded, surrounded by a sturdy wall and equipped with a comprehensive security force and sentry weapon system. Forcing his way in was unreasonable for Adenauer in his current disguise, but with little intelligence available, there were few other ways to infiltrate. Entering Johor Bahru through the main entrances and exits was unlikely, as there were no decent camouflage props. He could return to the air-raid shelter and use the skins of the soldiers he had killed there as a disguise. However, if these teams were truly connected to Johor Bahru, or had come from Johor Bahru, then the identities of these armed forces would normally be strictly controlled and easily discovered. Therefore, it was not feasible.
Alternatively, they could charge in. However, given the scale of Johor Bahru's defenses, relying solely on guns and ammunition wouldn't be enough. Using contractor equipment to calculate various possibilities, Adenauer concluded that a head-on assault on Johor Bahru would require at least one main battle tank or a self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery vehicle. Not to mention the fact that operating these vehicles would require at least three people, even if there were single-person armored vehicles, finding them would be the primary problem. Adenauer wasn't familiar with the Johor Bahru dungeon; he had no idea of its size or the locations of its various facilities. The quickest way to obtain an armored vehicle would be to steal it from a military barracks, but there might not be one inside the dungeon. Even if there was, stealing a tank undetected would be nearly impossible.
After considering various possibilities, Adenauer still believed that after arriving in Johor Bahru, he would use the contractor's equipment to search the area outside Johor Bahru. Perhaps he could find some secret entrances or drainage systems. As long as he found these locations, he would be able to enter Johor Bahru without being discovered. As long as he entered Johor Bahru and triggered the mission, it would not matter even if he was discovered later.
Shortly after Adenauer finished his contemplation of Johor Bahru, he suddenly heard a noise. The source of the noise was near a storage room behind the convenience store. Being inside the gas station, it was not suitable for him to fire a gun, so he grabbed a hammer drill from the shelf, replaced the battery, and cautiously approached the storage room where the noise was coming from.
“Sizzle~!!”
The door to the storage room was locked, but that wasn't a problem. Using his hammer drill, Adenauer easily penetrated the lock and opened the door. Finding a good position, he pulled open the door in front of him. The lights from inside the convenience store revealed that the raccoon making the noise was a mere raccoon. It must have gotten in through the ventilation duct, likely attracted by the smell of food.
The raccoon was holding a torn piece of bread. Seeing Adenner's sudden entrance, it likely mistook him for another animal trying to steal its food and began to make unfriendly noises. A raccoon posed no threat to Adenner, but he disliked its attitude, so he kicked it and sent it fleeing from the storage room. After being kicked away, the raccoon, perhaps sensing the difference between them, fled with the bread in its mouth, running through the open convenience store entrance into the torrential rain and quickly disappearing.
"null."
"Ok?"
The noise was just a raccoon, not something Adenauer paid much attention to. So he prepared to leave the convenience store and return to his truck outside. His tank was almost full. But as he turned to leave the storeroom, his boots made a strange sound as they stomped across the floorboards. It was as if the floorboards he was stepping on were hollow.
"null."
To confirm that he had not heard wrongly, Adenauer stepped on the same floor again. Sure enough, the same sound was heard. Adenauer moved the goods next to it, revealing the complete floor. He squatted down and searched around carefully, found a raised position, extended the impact drill to the gap, drilled a gap that could be exerted by his fingers, reached his right hand in, and lifted the floor.
There was a locked trapdoor under the floor with an ordinary padlock on it. It didn't look old and should have been replaced recently. An impact drill was not suitable for such a lock, but it was easy to open with two pliers, which happened to be on the shelf of the convenience store. So Adenauer first returned to the convenience store, took two pliers, and also took away a screwdriver with a replaceable blade. After returning to the storage room, he used the two pliers to pry open the lock and opened the trapdoor.
There was a ladder below the trapdoor. It wasn't high, only about one or two meters. There seemed to be a small space below. Going down the ladder, it was dark inside, but there was a switch on the wall nearby. Turning it on, the space lit up. Looking up, I saw a lightbulb that wasn't working properly, and it looked like it had been used for a long time.
This place looked like an underground storage room or a vegetable cellar, but it was completely empty, with nothing inside except some construction debris. On the opposite wall of this space was a switch box. The lid was missing, probably broken. The edges were covered in rust, making it look like it was scrapped. The lever that turned the switch on and off was also broken, requiring additional assistance to move. However, the four fuses inside looked very new, probably having been recently replaced.
"Click."
“Sizzle…Sizzle…”
Using the pliers in his hand, Adenauer clamped the broken pull rod and turned on the switch. After a brief sound of electricity, the surroundings fell into darkness again. Looking up the ladder, he saw that the gas station above had also lost power.
"It's just an ordinary switch box."
Adenauer flipped the switch back on and restored the gas station's power. Seeing nothing to see, he climbed the ladder back inside the convenience store and prepared to leave. However, just as he left the storeroom, he heard the sound of a car engine starting up. He walked around the shelves in front and saw that the truck he had parked outside had already left the gas station.
"Wow! This is really rare! I didn't expect to see Adenauer get humiliated today. It was worth the trip!"
"That's right, it was at a gas station. If it was anywhere else, Adenauer would have opened fire. His things are not that easy to steal."
"Heavy rain may also be a factor."
"It's not that simple. Don't rob this guy's vehicle, no matter what you rob."
"But the truck has already gone far away. Even if Adenauer is a good shot, there's nothing he can do, right?"
"Not always!"
"No, judging from your tone, have you...had a similar experience?"
"...Um."
Amidst the discussion outside, the audience noticed Adenauer inside the instance, pulling out a non-smart 2G phone, dialing a number on it, and then throwing it away. Some eagle-eyed players immediately guessed the purpose of the phone.
"boom!!!!"
As the players watched, a huge fireball suddenly appeared in the direction of the truck whose taillights were about to disappear from Adenauer's sight, and an explosion occurred. The blazing fireball briefly dispersed the surrounding heavy rain, allowing people to clearly see that the truck had now become traffic waste.
"Fuck! IED?!!"
"I remember a buddy just mentioned that he seemed to have had a similar experience?"
"You're so unlucky... Never mind, take it easy, brother."
Among the many watching players, one winced, remembering a time when he'd met Adenauer in a dungeon and stolen his vehicle. Right up until the IED exploded, he'd been quite happy. After all, he'd snatched something from Adenauer and hadn't been shot. Whether he'd been bombed later or not didn't matter; he'd stolen it anyway.
"This is a lesson for us. Don't steal vehicles from Adenauer. Even if you do, do a thorough inspection first."
Adenauer yawned as he looked at the distant landscape gradually being covered by the torrential rain again. It was common sense to inspect a vehicle before acquiring it. After all, there were countless casualties killed by car bombs in real life, in movies, and even in games. But it had to be said that this little trick was surprisingly effective; there would always be someone unlucky enough to fall for this old-fashioned trap.
Losing the truck wasn't a big deal, after all, the town had plenty of cars. It was just that getting another one was a bit of a hassle, and even the cars we found weren't guaranteed to be usable. The water level in the town was already quite high, and even the convenience store, which had a higher ground inside the gas station, was about to be submerged. Ordinary cars couldn't operate properly on such flooded roads. Adenauer needed to find a car with a higher ground, or at least a higher exhaust pipe.
"Try your luck."
Adenauer walked back to the counter and began searching for the gas station owner's body. Gas station owners usually drove SUVs or pickup trucks. If he could find the keys on the owner's body, it meant his car was probably nearby. This would save him the trouble of wading through the water to look for his car elsewhere.
"I'm lucky."
Adenauer searched the body's pockets and actually found a set of keys. He peered through the convenience store window at the gas station and the nearby parked cars. He raised his car key and pressed a button. Behind the convenience store, he saw a modified pickup truck with its lights on. It must be the gas station owner's car.
"You're quite good at finding a spot. This place is just right for sheltering the car from the rain."
After walking out of the convenience store with the supplies, Adenauer came to the pickup truck, threw all the things inside on the back seat, got into the cab, started the car and checked the fuel gauge. The fuel was full and no refueling was needed.
“It’s quite convenient.”
Turning on the car's central control panel, the radio was still working normally, though the sound was intermittent, perhaps due to the heavy rain. However, it was not a big deal. Adenauer had not turned on the radio to get any clues, but simply to listen to music. But even if it didn't work, it didn't matter.
This car will be used frequently, and he did not have the necessary tools on hand, so Adenauer did not install an IED on this car, at least not now. Turning the key to start the vehicle, Adenauer left the gas station and drove out of the town.
The modified pickup truck could navigate the flooded road normally. It didn't take long for Adenauer to leave the town and hit the highway before the water rose to a dangerous level. Several vehicles were jammed here, likely belonging to residents attempting to escape. The residents could be seen wandering in the torrential rain, seemingly still shaken and stricken. To ensure his vehicle could reach Johor Bahru as quickly as possible, Adenauer chose a safer route, bypassing the frantic residents and their cars blocking the highway. Some wandering frantic residents spotted Adenauer's car and attempted to intervene, but were dispatched with a pistol he thrust out of the window.
After bypassing the blocked road and continuing for another half an hour, Adenauer finally reached a point near the river, free from the troublesome waterlogging. The forests on either side of the road effectively blocked the swollen river, and the road, with its gradually rising terrain, improved the road conditions considerably. While the area was still covered by heavy rain, the road was still a bit slippery, but it wasn't a big deal; as long as he slowed down a bit, there would be no accidents.
The situation in the town seems to only affect humans and has little effect on animals. In the woods on both sides, wild animals such as deer can be seen from time to time. Perhaps there are few vehicles passing through this road, so the wild animals are not very afraid of the noise made by vehicles and continue to do what they should do.
About ten minutes later, the radio inside the pickup truck's central console returned to normal, and the sound of the radio became normal. A country music was playing. Adenauer was not very interested in this kind of music, so he changed the channel of the radio. After searching for a while, he finally found the right music. While listening to the music, he continued to drive towards Johor Bahru.
